When you want to truly know a city you ask the locals. AVIA did just that, and here are picks and tips for diving into Savannah.

Albany, GA-native Michael Brooks moved to Savannah in 2005 and immediately fell in love with the Hostess City’s serene beauty, unique charm and vibrant characters. In February of 2006, he launched The South magazine—an award-winning bi-monthly publication that, in Brooks’ words, “attempts to capture Savannah’s quirkiness” through compelling photography and editorial. “I wanted our readers to know more about Savannah and what makes it one of the most desired destinations in the world,” he says. With a readership of more than 80,000 and subscriptions in all 50 states, The South serves as the go-to barometer for trends, style, entertainment and information on all things Southern. “I have the opportunity to meet so many of they city’s ‘connectors’ and behind-the-scenes folks who make this city run,” Brooks says. “It is a rare opportunity that one has to see the inner-workings of such a creative environment.”

  • What is your city best known for, as far as the locals are concerned?
Savannah is known for its quirky charm. It doesn't take long to realize this characteristic once you tour the city. Our locals seem to possess some of the most unique personalities.
  • Where are some places our guests should go to taste local cuisine?
For dinner, I would highly recommend Bull Street Chophouse, a new restaurant on the scene. It has some of the best local cuisine and the environment is inviting and daring. I love the location and design.
  • Where would you take your friends to experience the local music scene?
The newest and most exciting place is Live Wire on River Street. They are bringing in some exciting live acts.
  • What types of family fun activities would you suggest to those you know?
There is so much for the family: the Savannah River ferries, all the candy shops on the riverfront, the Oatland Island Wildlife Center, Fort Pulaski (try to catch the shooting of the cannons) and a day at the beach on Tybee Island. Kids love to watch the big container ships come in as well.
  • Hands down, what is your favorite local event or festival?
Absolutely, the Savannah Film Festival in October. Some of the most exciting people in the world attend this event.  But I must say, the Savannah Music Festival is a close second.
